Travel is in the details

Once you have decided which countries you are visiting, it's time to see what VISA requirements you need to enter each country. This is very important, and even points of entry can change requirements. Entering at an airport can be different than an overland border crossing.  More research. I will not get into the intricacies of visas, but the government of Canada's travel website has information on the visiting countries and provides information for each as do the countries themselves.  It is also a good idea to register with the Canadian government under "Travelling Abroad" to let them know you will be in those countries in case of an emergency.

Next step, do you need vaccinations to enter these countries?  I recommend that you visit a doctor/nurse specializing in travel. They will be able to assess vaccines you may require depending on where and what kind of trip you will be making.  For instance, if you are spending 3 months in the jungle, you may have to take malaria pills.  They will also prescribe any other medication which you may need while travelling.  Don't forget that you will be eating food that you may not be used to so you need to be prepared, we like to bring some strong antibiotics for emergencies.

Another important aspect is to purchase insurance. There are many different companies offering several types of insurance. In my opinion, the most important is Health/Medical insurance.  You may want to consider insurance for sickness, accidents and transportation to an international approved medical facility if necessary. There are other insurances which you may want to consider purchasing such as trip cancellation, interruption or delay, and loss and theft etc. If you have a travel credit card, make sure you read the insurance coverage. Don't go on your trip without considering insurance - it's not worth the risk!
